Growing up, mother made all our clothes and did wonderful handwork in the evenings.  I received my first embroidery kit when I had the mumps at the age of five and was making many of my own clothes by age nine.

I began quilting in 1994 because I was inspired to make wall art using fabric.  I took a quilting course from Phyllis Sawyer at Foxboro Fabrics to learn the basics, and haven’t looked back since.  I have been stimulated to expand my designs to incorporate more abstraction.  In my work the goal is to use the richness of the fabrics with the textures created by the three-dimensional nature of quilting and thread to evoke the magical beauty and complexity of the natural and psychological worlds.  I love working with batiks and with silks.  I also dye and paint some of my own fabrics.  My preference is still to applique and quilt by hand, but I have incorporated machine quilting and free motion machine embroidery into much of my work as well.

In 1998 I joined the Prince Edward County Quilters’ Guild.  I decided to exhibit the quilt I had completed while in B.C. at the 1998 PECQG Show and, much to my surprise, won an “Honorable Mention” ribbon.  Since then, I have won a number of awards in guild competitions.   As a member of the Quinte Fibre Artists I have been stimulated to expand my design and technical capacity as well as to strive for artistic excellence in the periodic shows we mount as a group.  I have also exhibited my work in the Quinte Arts Council “Expressions” shows and with the Stirling Fine Artists group shows.  My work is also displayed annually at the Tweed and Area Studio Tour.

As a fibre artist, I have taken many courses and workshops offered through the Prince Edward County Quilters’ Guild, Fibreworks Kingston, the Canadian Quilters’ Association, Quilting By The Lake, and several surrounding quilt stores.  Significant influences on my work include the members of the Quinte Fibre Artists, Phyllis Sawyer, Marion Spanjerdt, and Reynola Pakusich.
